Deb McCreary opened Eckel's Ice Cream Fountain at 36 E. Main St. April 26th in the landmark brick drug store building. It operate Wednesday through Sunday dishing out old fashioned ice cream sodas, sundaes, and banana splits.
McCreary, who is now from Camp Hill and lived in Mechanicsburg in the 1980's, said she came across the building when looking for a place to house her tax business. "I had walked by it many times because my parents lived on Main Street. Once I walked in, I completely fell in love and that was the end of it," she said.
Eckel's big claim to fame was its cameo in the 1999 film "Girl Interrupted" featuring Angelina Jolie, Winona Ryder and Whoppi Goldberg. The shop was transformed into a Christmas scene where the characters all sat down for ice cream.
