History of Eckels

Through the years, several businesses have operated at Eckels. The most recent was Olde Towne Books & Brew. The building dates back to 1879 when Walter Eckels opened it as a pharmacy, which his daughter, Mabelle Eckels Derr, continued to operate.

The original soda fountain and marble counter remain, as does the wooden tables and glass shelving. There is also a pharmacy museum filled with original pharmaceutical items like old band aids, medications, and medical tools.

Eckels is very famous for making an appearance in the Hollywood classic,"Girl Interrupted". Today you can see multiple pictures and scenes from the movie scattered across each of the tables and counter tops. The original candy jars and cookie containers were also collected and are displayed in the ice cream shop to this very day.
